What can emerging storytellers learn from this movement to help diversify and excite new audiences through storytelling and performance styles?
SUMMARY OF WORKSHOP:
In this interactive workshop, participants can expect to grasp a background into the global slam poetry movement and explore the dimensions to story slam.
The workshop will start with some examples of slam poetry in action and then focus on practical and performance opportunities to perform within a mock slam setting.
Come ready with pen and paper and try your hand at slam poetry by identifying a key issue – either in a personal story or a folktale – and converting that story into a slam poem.
What to expect:
In this workshop, participants will:
- Be exposed to methods and techniques in using, writing and performing slam poetry as a genre of storytelling.
- Learn about performance telling, story and poetry slam movements as a form of community building and empowerment.
- Engage in writing, and explore stories within a frame of a slam performance.
- Explore the connections to the ancient art of oral tradition in the form of a new emerging oral tradition.
No prior experience in slam poetry is necessary.
